Tennis was popular in Saratoga Springs in the 1880's and 90's. There was a tennis tournament on Temple grove in 1887 and a State Championship was held for four days in Congress Park in 1891.
In 1898, The 400 American Journal of Travel, commented: "Saratoga remains the queen of American summer resorts as easily as Victoria continues on England's throne." There are "...a bewildering programme of regattas, races, golf and tennis tournaments..."
At the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club there were four grass courts and two other courts for the tennis aficionados at the turn of the century. The mowing equipment used for the golf course was adjustable, and could be used for the courts also.
Most impressively, the grass courts still exist today-a rare opportunity short of Wimbledon to play on grass. In addition the Club has added 4 other courts for the members.
